Road Safety

A new approach to road safety has been proposed by Fr Robert McCabe, a priest of the Diocese of Meath, based at Gormanston Camp, County Meath.

Fr McCabe hopes to add a Christian dimension to recent initiatives aimed at reducing the number of road-user injuries and deaths. Since 1991, yearly statistics show that over 400 roads-users are killed every year and 10,000 people are injured annually.

Posters displaying the message Road Safety is a Christian Value have been circulated to parishes all around the country. A wide-range of resources for Christmas and the New Year have been offered to those publishing local community and parish bulletins on a weekly basis.

Fr McCabe proposes that the Christian vision of the sanctity of human life be actively extended to the area of traffic and road use.

This initiative supports all the recent attempts to bring down the fatality and injury statistics on Irish roads. It is aimed at all road-users and has been endorsed by religious leaders, Garda Síochána, PSNI and the National Safety Council.
Funding has been provided by the National Roads Authority.

The central slogan of the poster-campaign is based on St Matthew's Gospel 'Love God...Love your neighbour...Don't meet them both by accident!'

The campaign was launched on Sunday 15 December 2002.
