PLANNING THE FUTURE CAMPAIGN
Our Diocese of Down & Connor has begun a campaign "Planning the Future" to raise funds for the following vital areas of Diocesan Life that are in urgent need of attention:
1. CLERGY RETIREMENT FUND: The priests of the Diocese are getting older. Most of them keep working well beyond the normal retirement age but the time will come when they can't work and will need support. Indeed this is already happening. Last year the diocesan collection for sick and retired priests amounted to £70,000 , but £270,000 was expended on providing for them.
2. With the shortage of priests there is more and more need for development of Lay Ministries especially in the area of Youth Ministry and Family Ministry. The training and administration of these is very expensive.
3. The Renovation and refurbishment of St. Peter's Cathedral, Belfast. Every diocese needs a Cathedral and St. Peter's, which was built in 1866 is in urgent need of repair.
Our own Parish also has needs. Repairs and renovations have been carried out in St. Patrick's, St. Brigid's and St. Malachy's, but repairs have to be carried out in St. Colmcille's. More work has to be carried out in St. Patrick's to correct damp in the sanctuary. The Organ in St. Patrick's also needs repairs. Finally, the Parochial House is in very bad condition with damp and wood rot.
All of these matters require a great deal of money and we hope that you will support this fundraising drive for the benefit of the diocese and our parish. The total aimed at for the diocese is £7,000,000. Bishop Walsh has already raised £1,500,000. The target for our parish is £176,874.
Parish Representatives will visit homes in the parish over the next few weeks with Pledge Cards. All donations are confidential. If a Parish Representative does not call with you and you wish to make a donation, please contact Parochial House Tel: 02844612443
All Pledges should be returned to Canon Murray.
