LEGION OF MARY APPEAL:
Since our appeal to you last year, two parishioners generously came forward to join us and we were delighted to receive them. They are now well settled in and happy to be engaged in the work of the Legion of Mary. We now have six active members but for a parish of this size that number is really inadequate to cover all the work there is to perform.
Our Parish Priest has given us permission to make another appeal to practising Catholics over eighteen years of age, especially to our young folk, and also to those who may have spare time on their hands e.g. single persons, the retired, senior citizens, the unemployed, who would demonstrate a generosity of spirit to come forward and join our branch of the Legion of Mary to enable us to carry on with our present scheme of work.
We carry out our weekly duties of visiting 4 wards in the Downshire Hospital, the Assessment Unit of the Downe Hospital, Lecale Lodge, Strangford Court and St. John's Nursing Home. We pray the Rosary weekly in the latter two homes. We also do home visitation, but this is very limited because of our few members. We would like to be able to take the Fatima Statues round the parish homes to encourage people to pray the family rosary, but we would need new members for that. During the school year we visit one school each week as part of our Youth Apostolate work, which involves showing a video of Fatima, on a big screen to the children. We conclude our short session with the children by asking them to be children of prayer to God who loves them dearly. It is the dear wish of Our Lady of Fatima that we pray the rosary in the home. The children are made aware of this and we hope that parents will take heed of the prompting of their children. One of our new members is now doing this work and enjoys it very much.
It is important to remember that personal sanctification is the first priority of Legion membership. The work obligation is a means towards achieving that end. As members we are expected to do at least two hours of active work, as outlined above, each week. Our weekly meeting takes place in St. Michael's Parish Centre at 7.30pm each Tuesday, the meeting lasts just under an hour. Just drop in and you will be made to feel very welcome without any obligation to join.
